Crochet4Change is a Maryland-based non-profit working to reduce plastic bag waste and aid those who are experiencing homelessness. We seek to promote sustainability and compassion through the medium of crochet, helping both the environment and those in need.
Crochet4Change started in 2023 in an effort to achieve one of the highest honors a Girl Scout can receive: the Gold Award. Since its inception, Crochet4Change has sought to create a positive impact within our community and throughout the nation and intends to do so years from now.
"Plarn" is yarn made from plastic. In order to make plarn, plastic bags need to be cut into uniform strips and subsequently weaved together one-by-one. This plarn can then be neatly rolled into balls in preparation for being crocheted.
Plarn mats are 6ft x 2.5ft mattresses crocheted entirely out of plarn. These mats are durable, lightweight, and waterproof in addition to having great insulation. As a result, they are incredibly beneficial to those who are homeless, especially during cold months in which they are at high risk of hypothermia.
Plarn mats require anywhere from 500-800 plastic bags and can take anywhere from 6-10 hours to crochet.
Crochet experience is not required at all to contribute. If you wish to attend volunteer events, there will be plenty of opportunities to create the plarn. In addition, if you wish to learn to crochet, there are tutorial videos available on the website.
